Gibson released the SG in 1961 as the replacement for the Les Paul ! Fortunately Gibson realised that the SG was appealing to a totally different guitar player & they re-introduced the Les Paul in 1968 to run along side the SG. The SG Standard is made from solid mahogany but uses a thinner slab body design & therefore its lighter than a Les Paul. Its still got plenty of balls as its loaded with 490R & 498T Alnico Humbuckers - perfect for that classic rock growl that we all associate with bands like AC/DC. The SG Standard is a real looker too - the most classic colours are the Cherry Red & the Ebony Black. We always think the word "Standard" some how under sells both the SG & the Les Paul. Designed to become even more lovely as the years pass and to withstand a lifetime of play the SG Special and the SG Standard share the same time-consuming finishing process. Over the course of many hours American craftsmen apply each coat of paint and lacquer by hand to emphasize and protect the natural beauty of the mahogany.
