P-3 C Orion plastic kit from German specialists Revell. The Lockheed Orion came into existence in 1958 as the successor to the P-2V Neptune. Its main applications were long-range patrol flights over large sea areas and anti-submarine warfare. In addition to extensive electronic equipment, a special feature of the Orion is the long projecting MAD boom on the tail for tracking submerged submarines. Eight torpedoes or depth charges can be carried in a weapons bay in the fuselage. On 13th August 1962 the first P-3A Orions went into service with the US navy. The P-3C is the most numerous variant of the Orion, equipped with four Allison T-56-A-14 turboprops, 4,910 hp each, enabling it to carry out very long patrol flights. The Orion can carry additional torpedoes, mines or Harpoon missiles on 10 external underwing weapons stations. In addition to the US navy numerous European countries use the Orion.
